Description

“The Raven and the First Men” (1980) by artist Bill Reid is a magnificent sculpture carved of laminated yellow cedar. The sculpture was unveiled by Prince Charles (Prince of Wales) and by the Haida in 1980. The sand around its base is from the Rose Spit, the beach on the northern tip of Haida Gwaii, and was added to the sculpture by children from this coastal area.

The magnificent sculpture depicts one Haida origin story. The Sculpture depicts Raven coaxing men out of a clam shell. On the tail of Raven is eagle. The Haida have two moieties (lineage groups) – Ravens and Eagles.
